The education system in Great Britain has developed from humble beginnings into the diverse arrangements which exist today. Provision in each of the four 'home' countries (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) differs significantly. For the benefit of British parents, as well as enquirers from overseas, the explanation which follows attempts to de-mystify elements which may otherwise appear contradictory.

The State Sector

The British government provides free education to all those of compulsory school age (5+ to 16+). Responsibility for education in Scotland and Wales is devolved to the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly respectively. In Northern Ireland there are selective and non-selective schools, as well as those with traditional religious affiliations. The Scottish system is substantially different from the other home countries and for many terminates with 'Highers' at 17+.
