Repton launches international boarding school in Dubai|31/10/2006|The announcement this week that Repton School, Derbyshire, one of the UK's oldest public schools, (founded 1557), is to launch a new boarding school in Dubai heralds a significant step forward in providing an education that truly prepares young people for the global market place of the future. Robert Holroyd, our Headmaster, explains the idea behind the new School.
"The principle underlying Repton Dubai is that current and future generations of our pupils will undoubtedly be going out to seek employment in a market place that crosses international boundaries, and I believe that we must reflect an understanding of this in the education we offer to our pupils. Whilst a small number of UK independent schools have taken a pioneering international step and established day schools abroad, it is the extensive boarding element of Repton Dubai that makes this project a first and will in due course enable us to make pupil exchange with Dubai a regular feature of the Repton curriculum.
The new co-educational boarding and day School will occupy a prime site in Dubai and admit pupils from September 2007, initially in the junior section (aged 4 though to 11), but subsequently in the senior (11-18) section too. It aims to have an initial intake of up to 500 pupils, and state-of-the-art boarding facilities with living and study accommodation of the highest international standards will be provided from the upper end of the Junior School right through to the Sixth Form. Eventually it is hoped that the boarding population will account for up to half of the total pupil numbers of the School.
As well as lending its name to the new venture, Repton will provide the educational expertise to launch the project, working with our Dubai partners on the key issues of curriculum, architectural design and staff appointments.
I believe that Repton has developed a highly successful brand in the UK and that this brand will transfer well to the Dubai market. Our research tells us that here is a strong need in the market for boarding not only in Dubai, but in the wider community of the Gulf Cooperation Council States (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE). Parents and pupils will be attracted by the possibility of boarding merely an hours flight from home in a school that will be sensitive to local cultural and religious needs as well as providing an international dimension.
Repton Dubai will be a secular School, but will encourage its pupils in the learning of Arabic and also offer them the opportunity to attend religious services according to the denomination of their choice. The School will offer a British curriculum to Year 11 (end of GCSEs) but in the Sixth Form the intention is to offer the International Baccalaureate alongside A levels.
This will enable parents from even further afield who are interested in an international Sixth Form education for their children to consider sending them to Dubai. The future could eventually be an international boarding education in one of the most vibrant commercial centres in the world for less than the cost of a boarding education back home!
The project also offers significant international opportunities to Reptons UK students and this is one of the key components of the scheme. Exchange projects between UK boarding schools and overseas schools have often foundered because of a lack of suitable facilities but the boarding element of the new School will enable us to offer exchange with Dubai as a standard part of the Repton curriculum and this will be an exceptional opportunity for our pupils. I envisage that within five years Reptonians will experience a period of their Lower Sixth year in Dubai, living in Repton Dubai and attending a course that will give them an introduction to the international business environment. The different term dates that operate in the UK and the Gulf will enable this to happen without disruption to UK studies and furthermore, ICT links between both schools will offer real time lesson and lecture transfer that will broaden the educational and cultural horizons for pupils both in Repton and Dubai.
It is through these links that Repton pupils will develop an understanding of how different cultures work and interact. My own time living and working in South America showed me how vitally important this is for young people moving into the global workplace. The worldwide dominance of English creates an illusion that we can simply transfer our way of doing things into a foreign environment. Nothing could be further from the truth. Although English is widely spoken, we waste that advantage if we do not understand the need to adapt our approach according to local sensitivities ways of working and doing business are very different from culture to culture and pupils who are armed with advance knowledge of this fact will be at a distinct advantage. This new project will enable Reptonians to develop precisely such an understanding. At a time of international tensions, especially between the West and Arab world, I also believe it is vitally important that pupils should have a real sense of what it means to work in partnership. This project will enable them to experience and develop an understanding of the Arab world in an environment that is both stable and safe.
