[edit] Overview
Reading Blue Coat School (Aldworth's Hospital) has always set great store by the philosophy that a good education is much more than a formal academic training. Consequently, whilst regarding the quest for academic excellence as paramount to an effective education, much time and effort is devoted to the nurturing of personalities which are 'well-rounded' and thus capable of coping with the challenges of life both in the workplace and in the family.
Young people need opportunities that will enable them to test and develop their physical and mental skills. They need to acquire sound values, a sense of social responsibility and qualities of leadership. It is our intention to offer these opportunities to our pupils not only through the academic curriculum and the extra-curricular programmes but also through the moral codes that underpin the everyday life of the school community.
The School was founded in 1646 by Richard Aldworth, a merchant of London and Reading, who was also a Governor of Christ's Hospital. His will endowed a house near the Minster Church of St Mary-in-Reading to be established as Aldworth's Hospital and to provide 'education and upbringing'.
